Orphanage
Our orphanage in the village of Kakinada cares for over 120
children. Our Indian director and his team of staff look after the
children in a multi-level building a few kilometres out of town.
The Children
The orphans come from many different backgrounds. Some children
have lost their parents to death, and some have been sold off as
slaves. Many of these children we find wandering around the streets
- competing with diseased pigs and stray dogs for scraps. They were naked and dirty,
their hair matted with head lice, their bodies swollen from
malnutrition. They were unable to read or write, and some could not
even tell you their name. We give these children a real life by
taking care of them, and showing them a love they never once knew.

Schooling
During the year 1999, we began our own school - as an extension of the
orphanage. This allowed us to teach the children in a Christian
environment. During the day, the children are taught reading and
writing (in both their native language, and English), maths, and Biblical
studies. |
|
Before we had our own school, the children used to attend evening
classes
for Biblical studies, and supplementary teaching.

Past-Time
During free-time, the children love playing team games. In
particular, they love to play cricket. On a recent trip to the
orphanage, a team from World Harvest Ministries presented the children
with a proper cricket set. This was a real treat for them as
previously they had been using sticks as wickets and and logs for
bats. Their eyes lit up when they could play their game like the
professionals. |

Sponsorship
Our orphanage relies heavily upon sponsors who regularly contribute to
our work. We have orphan sponsors both here in Australia, and
overseas who donate $30 per month to support a child. This money is enough to
feed a child, clothe them, house them, and school them. That's just
$1 per day.
